Latest Food Craze

Filed under: food — juliana @ 10:28 am

There’s one Filipino dish(ginisang chayote) that I have been making every week for the past three weeks together with sweet plantains as a result of the visit to the Caribbean. This is because my husband has taken a liking to them. The chayote dish was even more wanted when he had oral surgery as it is easy to chew. He says he likes the taste so much. I got this recipe from Lisa’s food blog. I must admit, there’s tons of Filipino dishes that I can’t cook because I simply don’t know how, as I never cooked when I was still back in the Philippines. I only learned and started to love cooking after I got married. I’m glad, Lisa’s blog comes in handy whenever I want to try something new. Thanks Lisa. Hope you keep posting Pinoy dishes so that novice cooks like me can learn.

This is it:

Disappointed

Filed under: food — juliana @ 10:57 pm

I have been craving for my favorite lemon ring cake from my favorite bakeshop, Angelo’s so I have intended to go and pick up one, but it’s good I called first to check. My luck… the girl informed me they ran out of it for the day, and there is no more that was going to be available for the rest of the day. It was only 2:30 p.m. and I thought it was kind of early for them to run out of it.

This craving has to wait. I already ordered one for pick up tomorrow. It better be, because I’m just dying to gobble it up. They make it so good, I have never tasted such a perfect combination of lemon taste and sweetness.

Metropol

Filed under: food, travel — juliana @ 7:45 pm

No, the title is not misspelled. That’s the name of this Cuban restaurant we went to, off Isla Verde Avenue. It’s walking distance from Ritz-Carlton which made it very convenient for us. We actually had two dinners at the same resto. The place has it’s own following as shown by the crowded dining area on both nights that we went there. The food was delicious, typical Cuban food. All the days of our stay, I can say that F really pigged out. And that’s probably the reason why he always made sure to hit the gym even for just an hour on days that were tight.

Here’s some more pics of the food. Sorry, I was just trigger happy. I hope you don’t mind.

Typical Latin Food

Filed under: food, travel — juliana @ 11:55 am

Eating Latin food is like eating Pinoy food. Every single dish I ordered during the duration of our stay didn’t taste foreign at all to me. My husband who has learned to love Filipino food because of my cooking, also enjoyed the food. Of course, we do get a taste of Latino food here in New York, as we have a lot of Latin restaurants here, but it’s different if it’s really prepared by authentic Latin cooks. Great food, plus live Latin music while dining was such an experience.

El Patio de Sam

Filed under: food, travel — juliana @ 5:09 pm

We had dinner at El Patio de Sam, located in Old San Juan. It’s been a San Juan tradition since 1945 with the authentic old world ambiance. I had a good exercise climbing up to San Sebastian St. where it’s located. They serve Puerto Rican food. I don’t remember the name of F’s plate of food, all I know is it was chicken, and mine is called Mofongo with shrimp. It is a popular dish, made from fried green plantains seasoned with garlic, olive oil and pork cracklings, then mashed. I tell you, this is so delicious, I loved it. After feasting on this plate, I had no more room for dessert.

See what he’s doing? Wala kasi siya nun.

Eat Where The Locals Go

Filed under: food, travel — juliana @ 7:27 pm

So, how have we been doing with food? Well, since we got here last Monday, Frank and I prefer to eat only where the locals go. We’ve had some pretty good discoveries and I must say that they’ve all been good. Here’s some pics of Agua Viva, the resto we went to in Old San Juan. Rated 3 diamond by AAA, they serve total Latino inspired seafood.

Cooking Interrupted

Filed under: food, marital bliss — juliana @ 7:05 pm

I have the choice to declare whether it’s cooking night or not. When did I get this privilege? About a week and a half ago, since my childhood friend passed away. I was accorded this option by my husband because he is very well aware of what I’m going through.

So, earlier today, I already told him to get himself ready for one of those quick meals. I went to pick up macaroni salad from the deli and he will have to pick which “quick meal” he wants from my inventory in the freezer. As always, he is not complaining and he understands. I’m not in the mood to slave myself in the kitchen tonight. I’ve made dinners from scratch the past two nights, and I figured tonight we’ll have to make do with something quick.

I think, this marks the official start of my weekend  .

My Beef Stew

Filed under: food — juliana @ 6:57 pm

As I’m writing this entry, my beef stew is on the stove simmering. I have opted to make beef stew the traditional way without using my slow cooker. I started the preparation at 4:30 p.m. I must admit, it takes a lot more time to prepare, but since this is my second time to make beef stew using this recipe, I know for sure that F will be glad to dig in as he did the first time. He and I thinks, cooking stew the traditional way is a lot more delicious. There’s something to it that stew made from using a slow cooker just does not give.

Needless to say, I’m kind of exhausted. I was standing for a good one hour browning the meat and chopping and slicing the vegetables. It will be all worth it knowing that we will have  satisfied our bellies tonight. And the husband’s smile and unending praises I will get form my him: priceless! I’m really officially back in my kitchen: cooking.

Back To The Kitchen

Filed under: food — juliana @ 2:46 pm

As I’ve written before, I have totally lost interest in cooking the past few weeks. I have finally started to ease in to making dinners again. So last night, I prepared New Zealand Lamb Shank with rosemary and mint sauce, and made baked potatoes. I wrote, ‘I prepared’ because I didn’t really make it from scratch. I figured, since I am good as starting out again, I opted to raid my freezer and I picked this easy and quick dinner from the box.

It was satisfying and it was delicious. The meat was so tender and juicy. Tonight, I will tackle and work on a dinner made form scratch. It’s nice to be back.

Easter Sunday Dinner

Filed under: food — juliana @ 5:50 pm

We didn’t go out to dinner. Food was brought in from the nearby Japanese resto. We didn’t feel like going out again, as we’ve had two rough days (Friday and Saturday).

These were mine, and F had exactly the same plates of food.

Do you think we’re just over-eating? I certainly think so, but…
