Passover

Filed under: celebrations — juliana @ 8:57 pm

Tonight is the first night of Passover, simply known as Passover Seder. Passover is a Jewish  holy day and festival commemorating the Exodus from Egypt and the liberation of the Israelites from slavery. It is also known as Festival of the Unleavened Bread and a time of renewal and rebirth. As many of you may know, Frank grew up  practicing the Jewish religion. It is apparent though, that he is now a non-practicing Jew. In fact, I refer to him as a “rebel Jew”.

Jewish families observe the first night and get together for Seder, a symbolic dinner where the story of the Passover is told. As you maybe guessing by now, there is no way Frank would have been to any Seder. My mother in law has already “resigned” from making any celebratory dinner. So tonight, the husband and I feasted on a “Caribbean dinner”, a prelude to what we will be feasting on  next week.

I’m Off

Filed under: celebrations — juliana @ 2:54 am

Today is my birthday and I’m officially declaring it a holiday for me. I’ll be back tomorrow. Not that we’re having a big celebration, but I just want to spend the day just staring at the ceiling LOL(just kidding).

A Card

Filed under: celebrations — juliana @ 6:15 pm

Yes, folks that’s right. For Valentine’s Day, I got a card… a valentine’s card from my dear husband.

Kind of mushy but isn’t V day mushy anyway? Dinner was home cooked, by me , of course. Oh, and this is my only present, mind you. But I’m not complaining, because tomorrow is my birthday and I must tell you, that I will not get a birthday present too. My presents are already bundled up for the year, and they’re in the bag!!!! Oh, I can’t put them in a bag, nor a box. I’ll let you know in due time.

By the way, that’s it for you to see -  my husband’s “chicken scratch”.

Valentine’s Day

Filed under: celebrations, daily chatter — juliana @ 7:39 pm

Seem like we were just celebrating New Year’s Eve, but NO we’re now celebrating the day of hearts. Whether we have a happy heart, aching heart, broken heart, or just mending heart, Valentine’s Day should be a significant day. It should not just be a day for people with partners.

The husband is working tomorrow, so V day celebration for us is definitely not going to be tomorrow. It may be a double celebration because my birthday is coming up too, two days after Valentine’s Day. Monday, the 18th is President’s Day, and it’s a Federal and Bank Holiday, so Wall Street people will be off, so that it’s going to be a choice between Saturday and Sunday. You know, how restos can get crowded too, the weekend after V day.

Whatever and whenever, all I can say is; this is just my mind planning. It’s always a “wait and see” between us, because  previous years, the husband sometimes pull off a surprise.

To all of you, have a very pleasant and happy day of the hearts!

Victory Parade

Filed under: celebrations — juliana @ 5:22 pm

Like Super Tuesday(Primary Election) is not enough for New York today, the Giants celebrated with a big bang down the streets of Manhattan.

Despite the gloomy weather, as the sky was gray all day, New Yorkers and non-New Yorkers alike trooped down lower Manhattan to join the fun. The temperature though, was mild which is so unlikely in February. The crowd was estimated to be around two million as the float made its way from Battery Park to Broadway and Chambers Street down to the City Hall.

In connection with the Giants winning the Super Bowl, I want to share a funny story which my husband recounted to me last night. In his workplace, there’s a guy that adores the Giants so much, a real big Giants fan. He is very passionate about sports and for every team that he adores, he takes every single game very seriously. So when the Giants made history last Sunday, he went in to work yesterday wearing Giants sweater but of course, he had to change to his office attire later on. But that’s not all, he walked in with a Giants streamer which he hanged from the ceiling near his work area. To top it all of, he had with him a pink colored boom box (which his 6 year old daughter owns), and off he started playing the music “We Are The Champions”, then ended with a short speech. The whole floor practically halted and watched what he was doing and gave him a big applause after.

Now, tell me, isn’t that hilarious?

Dinner For Two

Filed under: celebrations, food — juliana @ 4:33 pm

Last night’s dinner was brought in as usual. It was Frank’s birthday, but even if it was his special day, the internal arrangement goes through. As you know, he takes care of our food on the weekends, as it is my three off days from cooking. So what did we have? Italian food from Lasagna Ristorante in Manhattan.

Stracciatella Fiorentina(chicken broth with spinach, egg and grated Parmesan cheese)

Broccilini with sundried tomato

Lobster lasagna

Fresh fruit cake from the ever reliable bakeshop in our neighborhood

The celebrant was happy and enjoyed the food. Best of all, we celebrated in the comfort of our own home and we didn’t have to brave the rain and strong wind that bathed New York all day yesterday.

It’s my husband’s birthday today. No celebration is planned, just a quiet dinner here at home.

To my one and only, here’s to another year of good health and blissful togetherness. Happy Birthday!

New Year’s Eve in New York

Filed under: celebrations — juliana @ 7:00 pm

Tonight, at the strike of midnight, all eyes will be at the Waterford crystal ball at Times Square here in New York. This is our 7th New Year’s eve together and my husband and I have been ushering in the new year pretty much the same way every year since we were together.

Tonight is no exception. We will surely be glued at the telly watching the thousands of revellers in New York city. We’ve always stayed home on  the eve of the new year  every year. We went to my sister’s place yesterday in lieu of a new year’s eve dinner with them.

From our family to yours, Happy New Year everyone!!!!

Hanukkah

Filed under: celebrations — juliana @ 11:02 pm

Tonight started the week long (9 days to be precise) Hanukkah celebration of the Jewish religion. My husband is a non practicing Jew himself, so it really is just an ordinary week for us.

Hanukkah is festival of lights, sort of like equivalent to  Christmas but of course celebrated differently. The menorah, which is the symbol of the whole celebration is equivalent to the Christmas tree. It’s a festive celebration wherein Jewish families get together every night of the 9 days where kids play the dreidel and get their presents(1 for every night).

How exciting it must be to be a recipient of all those presents!
