Tranquil Christmas Celebration

Christmas eve was spent quietly at home – just me and my husband. It was a big departure from past Christmas eves wherein we have consistently celebrated with family and friends at my sister’s home on Long Island. It was too quiet, I kind of missed the big party which normally lasted till 1:00 in the morning, and the long gift giving ‘ceremony’ at the strike of midnight where everyone gets called out to get his/her presents.

We politely turned down an invite from a family friend, because we didn’t want to brave the traffic on the parkways in time for dinner. That meant, we were not going to see family and friends, as this was the chosen venue for the year. Although, my sister was a bit disappointed with our decision, she was nice to invite us at their home for dinner on Christmas day.

In the company of family and not-so-traditional Christmas fare, it was fun seeing them that day. The ever indulgent hostess that she is, her fine china and silverware were rolled out even if it was just us.

Sans, the usual dancing, singing  and big crowd, my sister’s family, my husband and I reveled in the joy of being together and enjoyed  the sumptuous meal and the gifts on a very special day.  My husband does not observe Christmas, as he is Jewish, but he has been in tune with my family’s Christmas celebrations ever since we were married.

This was the ninth, and I’m looking forward to our tenth Christmas celebration together come December because then, we may  be celebrating the holidays with a BIG CHANGE.
