A Promising Breakthrough!

Medicine and Science have gone a long way. Eons ago, we never thought that studies and researches in Medicine and Science would yield to prevention and treatment of diseases. We are lucky to have lived through these years, so that if the need arise we can take advantage of these breakthroughs.

Take for instance the breakthroughs in stem cell research. I recently read the recent CryoCell Press Release which detailed the result of the study at International Society of Cellular Therapy. The study proved that when menstrual blood cells are added to the stem cells from umbilical cord blood, it expands the quantity of progenitor cells, the cells that are otherwise known to grow into mature blood cells.

Thus, with the above findings, it is clear to us that the increase in number of progenitor cells, would only mean one thing. It can expand the therapeutic or healing use of the cells, as well as it gives way to a more abundant and accessible supply of stem cell for transplantation.

Isn’t this good news for all of us? Such a breakthrough indeed! As a firm believer that stem cells that are found in cord blood can be used to treat more than 70 life threatening diseases that range from leukemia, neuroblastoma and lymphoma among others, I am all the more convinced now that the science of cord blood stem cell preservation is such a gem that everyone of us should appreciate. The combination of cells from menstrual blood and cord blood cells collected at birth, when processed and cryo-preserved, will in the near future, be the answer to the very many life threatening illnesses that we are facing.
