I just don’t get it! There’s tons out there in management level that really are not suppose to be managers. Having been in management myself from 2 giant, multinational manufacturing companies (Procter & Gamble and Sara Lee in my previous life) I can’t tolerate incompetence and ignorance most especially people management.
It’s always been a sensitive issue between me and my husband, as I tend to lash out and get animated on subject about people management. I can’t help it. I simply have to voice out what I know about proper handling of issues. Most companies are probably conducting the last 6 months appraisal if they do a review every 6 months and my husband’s firm is no exception.
What am I getting into? Managers should not only be technically competent, they should above all know how to handle people, which is why they have the title ‘manager’. There’s a big responsibility bundled in to the position. Performance Reviews are very important as this is the fine print of once livelihood. Raises and promotions are largely based on this piece of document thus, I’m equating it to once livelihood.
Should you feel your boss is incompetent in people management, and conducting performance appraisals, why not go to his/her superior and tell them to send your boss on a crash course on People Management.

I think part of the problem is that individual contributors get promoted into management because of their seniority and skill at the regular job. If people are the best at what they do, there is a perception that they should be the ones to manage everyone else who does that. And on the face it seems fair.
But the problem is management is such a separate and different skill. Sometimes a mediocre or slightly above average worker may make the better manager, but that seems somehow wrong in the promotion process.
And people only get long term experience in a particular managemnt position because they don’t get promoted higher.
